Stray NZ: Patch pass (3 days minimum)

This pass is good for those who just have a few days in New Zealand and want to get out of Auckland - and for those doing other trips who want to add on the Far North of NZ. We include a stop off on the way up in summer for you to have a snorkel or boat trip in Goat Island marine reserve. You also get to reach the very furthest Northern tip - Cape Reinga.

Paihia in the Bay of Islands is also a great small town to spend more time in summer and get some sunshine amongst a picture perfect location.

If you have slightly less time, you can skip out Cape Reinga on the Jack Pass. If you want more, check out the Murphy Pass.

  • Beautiful Bay of Islands.
  • Day trip including Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga, NZ's very, very far north!

Travel Day:               Auckland to Paihia

Nau mai, haere mai (welcome)!  Your Stray adventure kicks off in New Zealand’s largest city Auckland, known by those who live here as the ‘city of sails’ because of its location between the Waitemata and Manukau harbours, making it a boaters and yachters paradise.

We depart for the beautiful Bay of Islands, bound for the relaxed seaside town of Paihia often called the ‘gateway to the Bay’. We stop en-route for a chance to snorkel at the Goat Island Marine Reserve, New Zealand’s first marine reserve, before cruising up to Paihia for a relaxing afternoon in the stunning Bay. If the weather is unsuitable for a stop at Goat Island, we will visit the Parry Kauri Forest Park to hug some of the world’s mightiest trees, the native Kauri, on our way to Paihia.

We’ll stop at Te Paki Stream for a chance to try dune surfing on some of the biggest sand dunes in New Zealand, then head for Cape Reinga the pointy bit at the top of New Zealand. This is the spot that overlooks the meeting place where the Tasman and Pacific Oceans clash and as legend has it, is the departure point for Maori souls leaving New Zealand to go back to their spiritual homeland of Hawaiki.
NB. You cannot hop off the bus this day.

Accommodation: Hostel along the beach in Paihia.
